"Hip replacement."

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Trauma and Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was first referred to the royal infirmary Edinburgh in summer 2017. I suffer from osteoarthritis. I waited patiently and was given an appointment for the end of May to see someone. They were very nice and said they would put me on the waiting list. I asked how long I’d have to wait and was told I’d have my surgery within 12 weeks. I also said I was more than happy to go to the golden jubilee hospital in Clydebank. That would be convenient for me as my son lives nearby.

Almost 6 weeks later and I have heard nothing. My problem is that I live alone and I need to make appropriate arrangement. I do intend to stay with my son just after my surgery but all of this takes planning. I am getting more and more nervous and I’d just like dates so I can get organised. I think I have been more than patient. I keep hearing about 18 weeks from referral to surgery. In my case I can add 30 plus weeks onto that.

Dear Lindy 57,

Thank you very much for contacting us through Care Opinion.

I am sorry to read your post and would like to apologise that you are experiencing this wait for a hip replacement, and for the impact this is having on you. I can also understand that your stay with your son will require planning in advance of the surgery and how important it would be to know of these dates.

Unfortunately there are a number of services who have longer waiting lists and I am sorry that Orthopaedics is one of these services. The teams are trying to improve their waiting lists but I know that this does not resolve the difficulties that many patients are experiencing due to this.

If you would like to discuss this in more detail, I would be grateful if you can please contact the Patient Experience Team:

Very best wishes to you in the meantime.

Pamela

Update posted by Lindy 57 (the patient)

Thank you for you quick response.

I am aware that the nhs is under extreme pressure with waiting lists.

Like I said I am happy to go to either Edinburgh royal infirmary or the golden jubilee for my surgery. I have heard first class reviews about both hospitals.

Hopefully it won’t be too long until I receive an appointment firstly for my pre op and then my surgery.

Once again thank you for your prompt reply.

Best wishes
