My mother was admitted to the geriatric ward in June 2018 after she became increasingly poorly and I was unable to care for her properly at home.
On being admitted one of the doctors told her very bluntly that she" shouldn't be there and she should have stayed at home with me " even though she couldn't even lift her head unaided and even talking was difficult for her.
We were in the middle of a heat wave and I asked repeatedly if someone could help her have a wash as I hadn't been able to do it on my own in the 6 days previously so it was now approaching 9 days without being cleaned. It took 4 more days for them to finally do this .
What I found particularly upsetting was the fact that my mum had asked several times over 3 days for someone to remove the ( no longer needed )IV from her hand as it was painful . They didn't do this until I found out and asked them to remove it . My mum was crying in pain when they took it out after so long.
I must add that there was a nurse, a doctor and some healthcare assistants that treated her more kindly but they were sadly not the ones who were looking after her primary care the majority of the time.
What makes this treatment surprising is that I had my baby at this hospital and the maternity ward and every single person that worked in it was , without exception amazing .
