"Stay on CCU"

About: Russells Hall Hospital / Cardiology

I was admitted through A&E to AMU over night with suspected pulmonary embolism. A CT scan was performed in the morning and I was then promptly "kicked" out of my bed and made to sit in a waiting room whilst the scan results were processed. The diagnosis was confirmed and I was sent home with medication. Four days later I as admitted to CCU via ambulance as I was unable to breathe. The diagnosis was unbelievable, infection of the membranes around my heart, severe water infection, pneumonia all on top of bilateral pulmonary embolism. I am unsure how this all occurred with 3 days of discharge?

I was admitted to the CCU ward. I have met some wonderful staff, especially a Lead Nurse who is professional, knowledgeable and friendly and a student nurse, who is going to be extremely good at her job. I found the night staff fine but there last were 2 who stood out, the one lady was so nice and friendly and we chatted quite a bit the other was an agency nurse, she was professional, quietly spoken, friendly.

Sadly not all staff have the same attitude I found a couple to be rude and ignorant and some appeared not to want to actually be there but they were in the minority as the majority were good at their work.

I saw doctor's nearly every day and was informed of any tests needed and why, I was informed of the results and included in my care.

The cleaning appeared to be at funny times and quite ad hoc. I was in my own room for a week and I think it was mopped maybe 3 times and in-between a few sweeps?? The bins were emptied daily and the sink cleaned possibly everyother day?

The food was not that bad as far as hospital food goes, there was plenty of choice on offer so you could always find something you could eat.

My husband visited every day but was not made aware of the Parking Value Card and it's not publicised anywhere apart from the welcome booklet, which I was not given until day 7 of my stay...this would have saved my husband a lot of money as it was nearly £5 a visit.

The hospital has a "poor" reputation in our area but we have only recently moved here so it was our first experience. Personally I can not fault the care I received whilst on CCU but I will be querying why I was discharged so quickly FROM AMU especially as I was taken so poorly 3 days later.

Thank you for taking the time to send us such useful feedback Donna.

We aim to provide the best possible patient experience and whilst it is lovely to hear where we have done well, we are always disappointed to learn this may not have been the case for yourself.

We take all feedback seriously and use it to improve the services we provide.

We have forwarded your comments onto the teams involved who will be delighted you were happy with the care you received on CCU during your stay and will use your other comments to make improvements as identified.

It is disappointing to hear you felt you were discharged from AMU too quickly. We would welcome the opportunity to look into this and the other points you have made to understand what gave rise to the issues you experienced. If you have not done so already, we encourage you to please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) either via email dgft.pals@nhs.net or by telephoning 0800 073 0510.
