I recently visited the UCC at Newark with a suspected broken toe. It was a very busy time; the waiting room was packed and the reception area was displaying a sign saying there was a 3 hour waiting time.
It was not too long before I saw a kind and friendly nurse for an initial assessment. I felt that my problem was very minor and appreciated her time and understanding.
There were lots of parents with young children and babies, nasty looking sport’s injuries and people in wheelchairs. Eventually I was able to see a doctor and sent for an X-ray. I followed the signs but it was unclear to me where to go and there was nobody about.
That was rather daunting.
After the X-ray I was lucky to find a chair in the waiting room and after another wait saw the doctor who efficiently strapped up my toe. He gave me very little information about future care and attention and I was reluctant to take up more of his time with questions.
Overall my experience was a very positive one and I received excellent care. I didn’t mind the wait - it is wonderful to have such a facility for local people. There was a calm and efficient atmosphere on such a busy day.
My only concern was how little room there seemed to be for a wheelchair occupant and that there was a lack of privacy when a nurse spoke with her.
Grateful thanks to all of the staff for their good work.
"A long wait"
