"Long wait for take home meds"

About: New Cross Hospital / General medicine Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / General medicine

(as the patient),

I was cleared to be discharged from hospital on a Saturday and arranged for my partner to make the two hour drive to collect me at 2pm. The staff were on the phone constantly to pharmacy, chasing up meds for people due for discharge. When my medication arrived it was my ward IV medication not my take home. By the time it was sorted it was 10.30pm! Not only that,  I had been prescribed more of what I had already brought in with me and had plenty of at home. I only needed antibiotics.

I have been a patient at two hospitals where my discharge was delayed significantly because my take home meds weren't ready and I understand this is a common occurrence in most hospitals and has been for years.  If this is so, why hasn't it been addressed by now?

I would like to clarify that although New Cross is my nearest hospital and is the one tagged with regard to my story, it is not the hospital where I received treatment on this occasion (although the same type of thing has delayed my hospital discharge at New Cross also).
