i was diagnosed with prostate cancer following a PSA test carried out by my GP as part of an annual checkup.
An MRI scan was followed by a biopsy, then a few visits to decide how to attack the cancer given the complication of a rather tight urinary stricture. One particular surgeon recommended surgery, and I underwent a radical prostatectomy on 18 June.
My treatment throughout was amazing: every visit to the hospital was better than I dared hope.
The courage, confidence and capability of this particular surgeon and his team shone through, as they worked around scar tissue from a 50+ year old appendectomy, a badly swollen prostate and a stricture that was worse than tests had indicated, saving nerves (I think...) in the process and producing an outcome better than expected (so far...).
I’ve got to live with a catheter for four weeks, then we’ll see how I am at the review afterwards.
The Harvey 2 ward staff were brilliant, coping amazingly with difficult patients with good humour and total professionalism, despite the ward being full almost to capacity.
I cannot praise the staff at Nottingham City Hospital Urology Department highly enough: they represent the NHS at its very best.
"Awesome, just awesome..."
