"Ward 12"

About: The James Cook University Hospital / Older people's healthcare

My mam was on this ward for a week in May 2017. The level of nursing care afforded to her, was at best, so poor, words fail me. We as a family have had the best treatment in JCUH, on this occassion we had the worst. It was so bad we wanted her moved so she could be looked after at the end of her life. At our request she was fast tracked to a nursing home, as no beds avaiable at hospice. We should not have had to complain to a consultant in order for her to receive basic nursing care. Oral mouth care? Forget it. Washing blood from her hands after days? Forget it. Nor was it our place to remind a member of staff that once someone has vomited it is better to wash that area, then place a fresh gown on them, as opposed to just changing a gown. Food?

What is the point in a SALT notice above the bed, only for a member of staff to bring in chicken casserole, when reminded a soft diet was needed, sandwhiches where brought in ( notice also said no bread!)

When pointing this out, was said member of staff shrugging their shoulders, and saying its all they had!!!!

It would help if staff wore their name badges the right way round. If I thought that by complaing to the hospital, something would change, I would have done so. Sadly JCUH in my personal experience like to meet with you, discuss your concerns, empathise with you, say they will address these issues, and then, nothing, nothing changes. I have mentioned my concerns re this ward to the CQC. JCUH you are more than welcome to contact me.
