I think the play service is a really valuable service that helps children make the hospital seem less scary. It also helps give family members that extra support during what is often a stressful time. This allows family members to take a much needed break from the ward environment and allows the kids be kids. The only thing I would say is that I think there should be extra play service people located within the medical ward. This is a very busy ward with long term patients who are often scared and need extra support. Extra play people means that for those that need it, play is available.

Thank you for your feedback.

I agree the play service is an invaluable role within the children's hospital making it less stressful for children and their families.

There are two play specialists rostered to the second floor where the medical ward is located however they may not always be visible at all times due to working with individual patients for distraction and preparation.

If further play input is required for undertaking more distraction or preparation there is a member of staff on shift who co-ordinates a response from the play service team throughout the hospital and they can be contacted via a hospital bleep. The nursing staff in the ward will make contact with them but they may not be able to immediately respond if they are busy in other areas of the hospital but will respond when able to do so.
