"No one wants to be there unless they have to"

About: Northern General Hospital / Accident and emergency

This was the first time ever I have used the A&E at NGH I don’t think I will ever use it again.

The triage side of it was okish the nurse took you in asked you some questions she never examined or touched the area I was trying to explain I had to ask her to feel it. Was then sent of for some blood tests and a ECG which happened quite quickly after that was asked to take a seat in the waiting area for a doctor to speak to me.

Waited about an hour and a half then asked reception how would it be before I would be seeing a doctor she advised me around 4 hours😬. Then waited around an hour before leaving with out seeing a doctor yet doctors were coming out shouting patients who had decided to leave and not wait for that length of time. Doctors would should them get no reply then return back in to the minor injuries unit and not be seen again.

Surly the A&E departments need to look at the length of time any individual is expected to wait when someone has walked out they should be calling the n do patient to help speed the process up not disappearing for another hour before coming out again.

We understand that the A&E departments are busy and this one is a truma centre but they are well aware that the public use it as a means of health issues.

Sort out the way manage your time and some results can be obtained ASAP there is no need for a patient to be sat there for 8 hours if it is a fracture and they are waiting for a x-ray result .

This is why the A&E departments get a bad name to much time wasted and so much money wasted due to the staff not managing it well.

I am sorry to hear about your poor experience of using our A&E department and can understand that you felt frustrated, inconvenienced and anxious about the wait. I am sorry that you felt that your wait was too long and made the decision to leave.

As you have acknowledged A&E departments are busy areas and although we do try to staff the department accordingly and are constantly looking at ways to manage a safe and effective way of getting patients through to the right services or to the point of discharge, the waiting times can often be affected by the volume of patients and the severity of the cases that the medical and nursing staff are triaging and treating. Unfortunately, these factors are beyond our control.

I am very sorry that after having blood tests and an ECG your care did not end with a satisfactory outcome. I can only apologise for this.

Kind regards.
