"Lack of empathy, uncaring"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Urology (Bladder and Urinary problems)

(as the patient),

I have many issues with ward 209 for a couple of years I have being admitted in and out for catheter insertions. Mainly the issues are the staff I come into contact with do not seem to have an understanding of my condition or are not willing to understand my condition even though I left an information leaflet for my notes for each visit as they use the same notes they said.

This time round I was admitted a urostomy but it got cancelled, so I just got my catheter changed under anaesthetic instead which is what I normally get done but as I usually come back in extreme pain due to my condition I come back on 2hrly meds for pain relief. This is where is all started. I felt like Nurses didn’t like giving me pain relief every 2hours and it was as if I was be a nuisance.

My care lapsed the week before I came into hospital I had agency, but they only do weekends, my friend did my morning visit on the Monday and I didn’t have anyone at lunch time, then I have my PA at night and the next morning I had the nurses in and they got me organised for coming into hospital. I was honest from the minute I did my admission form my care at home lapsed and I was trying to seek care with the help of my care manager. I felt that this then changed everyone’s attitudes towards me, it was as if I planned this. The doctor then said I can’t get my operation unless I have 24hr care in place at home I didn’t have that before so why would he then decide that.

I felt staff complained if I buzzed and would say oh what are they buzzing for when all I ever buzzed for is pain relief or juice. But I felt I couldn’t even voice that.

I would ask to see a dr as I was still having trouble swallowing and the medication was finished and they kept saying yes I’ll get someone to see you on the next ward round, the next round would come and all I would hear outside my room is you don’t need to see her she’s social. It took my care manager to say I had been asking to see a dr all week for me to see someone. Then I developed my rash again on my chest which was linked to my oesophagus so I asked to see a dr again, still wasn’t getting passed on so this nurse eventually right outside my room mimicking me saying he better see me or I’d kick off when I wouldn’t. Thing is it’s got pretty bad now that I’ve had quite a few drs reviewing it.

But if someone could contact me please I can’t let you know the rest of the complaint.

Dear Loz85

I am very sorry indeed to hear of your experience in Ward 209. I am currently the Interim Chief Nurse for the Surgical Division at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. I would be very grateful for your time if you were in agreement to meet with me to discuss your concerns. All feedback is precious to us and hopefully your story can be turned into an improvement plan. Please contact me on 01224 553664 or by email at loldroyd@nhs.net

I would not like to think of you feeling the way you describe for a moment longer.

Kind regards

Dear Loz85

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk over some of your concerns with me on Saturday. As discussed I have made one of our Nurse Managers aware of the potential for you to be readmitted. They will ensure that all of your care needs are met to he best of our ability and in a person centred way.

In the meantime I will be in touch after my annual leave to further discuss your experiences in ward 209.

I hope your health remains as good as it can be.

Kind regards,
