"The Combined Assessment Unit at Ayr University Hospital"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Combined Assessment Unit (CAU)

(as a relative),

My husband was referred by his GP to attend the new Combined Assessment Unit at the University Hospital Ayr on a recent Tuesday.   When the GP phoned, they said just come along now and we will see him.   We were delighted and, once there, found that he was expected and they knew what was required.

Every step along the way was explained to us and that, after bloods had been taken, we would have to wait an hour and a half for the results and to see a consultant.  This happened exactly as stated and the consultant told us that he wanted my husband to come back the next day for another set of bloods and then he would have a scan on Friday afternoon.

When we went along on Wednesday, there was a bit of a wait but the bloods were taken and then we were told that they would try to get the scan done that day rather than waiting till Friday.   This involved another wait of a couple of hours but we were able to go for lunch and then come back.   We were accompanied round to X-ray for the scan and back again.   More or less immediately we were told the result of the scan and what was to be the treatment - none required.

At all times we were kept informed of what was going on, why there was a bit of a wait and offered a cup of tea.   The staff were very polite, calm and efficient and we were most impressed with the service given to all the patients we saw around the Unit.

Dear lacertask68

Thank you so much for your positive feedback about your husbands experience within CAU.

The unit has been running now for one year and it is great to receive comments from the people who have used the service, whether they are good or not so good, so that we can learn from them and make changes as required.

I will feedback to the whole of the CAU team. I know that they will be delighted by your comments.

I hope that your husband continues to make a speedy recovery.

Best wishes

John Swiatczak-Steele

Assistant Director of Acute Services - UHA
