Following my referral to RNOH Stanmore for bilateral end stage osteoarthritis, I had Surgery on my Left Ankle November 2016.
I was involved in all decisions prior to the surgery, I had the choice of fusion or ankle replacement and I was able to make an informed decision.
I chose to have Replacement (TAR) and RNOH Stanmore use the ankle replacement that I understand is the best currently available.
It is the only one with full computerisation for (as I understand) design and manufacture prior to fitting.
From information from a number of sources, I understood that the more Ankle Replacements a Surgeon does, the better the outcome of surgery is likely to be.
Age and weight are factors for having TAR surgery, I met the criteria, otherwise I would have had to have Ankle Fusion.
Ankle replacement statistics are now being recorded on National Joint Register database and information available suggests that currently of the patients who have ankle surgery I am among 15% who have had TAR surgery.
I consider myself fortunate to, have had this opportunity for my condition.
I could have wanted no better care.
I do not know if there is a more experienced Surgeon or a better Surgical team.
The operation and outcome exceeded my expectations.
Do I have any regrets, only that I was unable to use the site Restaurant during my stay as an inpatient, however I suspect that I would have put on a few pounds.
The hospital food had a good selection, was nourishing, and as I was confined to bed following surgery, adequate for my daily requirements.
A regular supply of hot drinks was available from early morning to late evening and on request during the night.
After my discharge I had regular appointments, I was able to use email if I had any queries between appointments, these were promptly dealt with and responded to.
On one occasion my next appointment was brought forward as the photo sent with my email query required physically checking.
An exceptional service by an exceptional hospital, which every member of staff contributes to providing.
Would I go back?
The answer is, Yes I have for my other ankle.
