"Quick diagnosis and treatment of melanoma"

About: Kidderminster NHS Treatment Centre

(as the patient),

In February I mentioned to my GP a flat dark irregularly shaped mole that had been on my inside arm for as long as i could remember. I did not really think it had changed but as colleague had had a melanoma diagnosed thought I would check it out.

I saw a dermatologist and Macmillan nurse the following week. Removal was suggested just in case so that it could not turn nasty. I was shocked two weeks later when as a career long health professional myself I recognised the consultant using the "breaking bad news scenario".

A short time later i had a wider excision of the original scar and received confirmation that all traces of the (thin) melanoma had been removed. I now check for any signs of recurrence every two weeks and have quarterly check ups for 1 year.

All those involved in my treatment have been friendly accessible, helpful, polite and professional and all appointments have been virtually on time. I am delighted to say that for me, at least, being on the receiving end of NHS care has been a very positive experience.
