I was left sitting in a wheelchair for hours following an RTA
I was involved in a RTA in March 2011, when my car was struck by a lorry and written off on the M6, and was subsequently taken to The Manor by the ambulance crew. At the scene I chose not to be put on a backboard and opted for a wheelchair instead. I was suffering from what appeared to be a whiplash type injury. On arrival at the A&E, a handover took place and the hospital staff advised of my assessment. After a number of hours, I was finally seen by the doctor, who asked me to stand, raise my arms, palpated my neck and back and ordered an xray of my wrist (which was previously fractured and causing pain). My neck was not examined properly or xrays done. I was discharged with painkillers. I have subsequently returned to A&E due to continuing pain with a referral from my GP, who asked for specific tests, which were not done, but have had neck xrays done and again discharged with painkillers. Almost 7 months later, I am still suffering chronic and acute pain in my neck, despite having been refered to a rheumatologist. He examined me, but did not have 'access' to my xrays, so ordered new xrays of my shoulder plus an MRI of my spine. He also arranged cortisone injections into my shoulder. I had the xrays a month ago, an MRI last week, but was discharged by the nurse that gave me my cortisone injections 3 weeks ago. I have now gone privately to another Specialist, as I am on the verge of a breakdown and potentially losing my job, as I have not been able to return to work full time. The doctors in A & E are so over worked, they have no time for patients (even at 3am). At no point, did the A&E staff ask for any input regarding decisions on treatment (if there were any) or explain the justification of their lack of treatment. I hope that after 6 plus months, I can get some answers and treatment, that will allow me to resume my life.
