"My midwife went above and beyond"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care (Wards 21-24)

(as the patient),

I would like to highlight the great level of care I received by my midwife in Wishaw University Hospital when I was there to be induced to give birth in May 2018.   I had to be at the hospital at 8am to be induced as my waters had broke 3 days before and hadn't went into labour. The day was very long as the gel that was used to try and induce me did not work, I was more to the prenatal ward to wait until I was called for the next process. At around  6pm, I was advised that I might not be taken today and it might be tomorrow. Then at 9pm I was told they I was being taken tonight. Lauren the midwife came for me around 10pm and was taken to my room in the labour ward. Lauren was absolutely fantastic I was a bit nervous as I had been waiting all day, she made me feel at ease from the minute I met her. I was induced via the drip and Lauren informed me of the process and took note of my birth plan and ensured me she would follow my lead re pain relief. From the the minute the process was started until the moment my son was born Lauren was amazing. My son was born the next day. She encouraged me and motivated when the going got tough and I didn't think I could go on any longer. Myself and my son were readmitted to the postnatal ward as my son had lost a lot of weight later that week, and Lauren came round to check on how we were doing, I felt she went above and beyond. I just want to highlight how amazing this midwife is and that the hospital is lucky to have someone like her, I wish everyone had the care experience that Lauren provided.

Dear Jupiterqe45

Thank you so much for your lovely letter in regards to the care you received here in the maternity unit at University Hospital Wishaw.

It is heartwarming to hear of the communication with yourself during your induction of labour process as we are aware that this can be a stressful time for you with the uncertainty of how long this will take.

I am so pleased to hear you felt supported, listened to and cared for by Lauren your midwife especially during labour. Labour is such an important time in your life and having that connection and communication with the midwife looking after you is so special. As midwives this is what we aim for every day and the fact that you felt safe and cared for will mean a lot to Lauren.

It is unfortunate that you had to come back in to the hospital and I note how you appreciated seeing Lauren when she came to see you, this again shows the bond you both had formed.

Please be assured I will ensure this letter is shared with Lauren which I know she will appreciate.

Thank you for taking the time to write especially as I can imagine how busy you are with your new baby son.

Hope you are enjoying lots of cuddles and not too many sleepless nights.

Kind Regards

Lyn
