"Physio, Pregnancy and Induction."

About: Hull Royal Infirmary / Maternity

(as a service user),

At my 12 week scan I discovered I was having twins which was a huge shock and explained why I felt so much more tired than my previous pregnancy.   Shortly after this I started getting numerous pelvis pains, I was referred to the physio who issued me with some crutches and said that’s all they could do.

Out of the following 3 appointments with them they were there for 1 as they were doing other things and I had to chase numerous times just to get another appointment each time.

Finally the day came for my induction. The staff were friendly and after waiting an hour on arrival, they admitted me to the ward. After a time I was put on another ward while the balloon was used, the room was sweltering despite all the windows being open which after 24 hours resulted in me having a chesty cough due to hay fever.

Another 24 hours after being told I would be soon going up to the labour ward I finally went up.  The staff were great and despite a high block on an emergency c-section they seemed professional. After labour I finally was admitted onto Rowan ward. The midwives were great in helping me on every buzzer as I could barely move, they said they would let the physio know I was there and were helpful.

After 3 days I could barely walk still and needed the use of the disabled equipment to help me especially when my husband was at home looking after our other child. All apart from one midwife were understanding that I had no available help but one evening when I could still barely stand up I was asked 6 times repeatedly if I had someone who could come and help me overnight which each time I explained I didn’t due to limited family and all my friends have young babies themselves and we had used our available childcare for the labour period to which the question wasn’t asked so when are you wanting to go home each time.

When recovering from an emergency c section and physically unable to get into a car and being emotionally and physically exhausted this set me off into tears once they had left for over an hour. I eventually went home and 2 weeks later gave up waiting for the physio to contact me as promised (unsurprising based on the experience during the pregnancy) and so am having to refer myself for a local physio and have had to get myself to the local gp where I have been referred for an mri due my mobility issues which could have been aided in hospital and caused me less stress with two newborn babies.   Overall the staff were fab but the experience was badly tainted by the one midwife who didn’t want to help and the physio.
