"Early Pregnancy Unit Closed"

About: Birmingham Women's Hospital / Maternity care

My wife is 13 weeks pregnancy and had found that she had been bleeding in which case we needed to attend the hospital to ensure that baby was ok. However, prior to 17 weeks, the women's hospital will not see you directly so she had to go to Queen Elizabeth accident and emergency for them to then triage her and refer her straight across as they could not do anything further.

She was referred to Gynaecology where the nurses and doctor that saw her provided absolutely fantastic care. They completed a very thorough examination and gave us the news that the bleeding was what they call 'threatened miscarriage' and either it could stop and baby will be fine or it could lead to a miscarriage. The only thing that will confirm this is a scan but unfortunately as it was after 1pm on a Sunday, the department was shut and with the Monday being bank holiday, the department was shut again. My wife was given a scan date for the Wednesday.

Any pregnancy is an exciting and anxious time for all parents' to be but with this being our first pregnancy, being told such news and then expected to wait because departments are only open certain hours we felt is disgusting. Gynaecology did all that was in their power but the main result we ultimately required, due to our problem not occurring during their operational hours meant that we have to wait when they reopen. How this ward is closed after 1pm on weekends is so bad it's untrue. To go back home thinking of this is horrific!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
