"waiting 14 weeks so far for kidney stone removal"

About: Southampton General Hospital

i was taken to urology dept in feb of this year and found to have a 6mm kidney stone. on 17th feb i had op to insert a stent. i was told i would wait 6 wks untill my 2nd op to remove both the stent and stone.

the first 5 to 6 wks i had no problems. i called the urology dept at about 4 to 5 wks in to ask when my op would be and that i would be going on holiday at the beginning of may.

i was told i was on the list but there was no date yet.

i ended up in hospital at the end of march with pain and was given more medication which worked for a few weeks.

i ended up on holiday in severe agony and was in a foreign hospital twice. as soon as i got home i went to a and e. i was on urology ward on sunday and had to fight to put my point accross that i needed the stent and stone removed. i had a urine infection which needed 2 rounds of antibiotics and could hardly walk.

i was down for emergency surgey wednesday which after being starved and waiting all day was canc. on the thursday surgery was canc again. i spent 5 days in hospital without anything being done.

i now have a schedule appt for next thursday when i would have waited 15 wks. i wonder if that will also be canc.

i feel i have been treated appalingly why lie and say 6 wks when u know the list is longer.

i have other health issues that are being impacted by this situation.the stone was not found on a scan or xray and i am sure its moved lower down as thats where the pain is. if the op was done within 6 weeks i would not have all the additional problems i had after the initial 6 wks. the stone at the time of my op would have been causing pain in the same place for 4 wks.

i really hope there is no long term damage to any internal organs because of the delay in removal. when being discharged from hospital as i have a weeks wait untill my schduled appt i asked for oramorph pain relief.

i didnt want to keep coming back to a and e when i could self medicate at home.

this was a major problem and the person i spoke to had a major attitude with me and was expecting me to be so gratefull that they had got me an appt for a wks time even thouugh i had already been waiting 14 wks. a friend of mine was sent home with oramorph but i was not aloud it.

the next day i called my gp and over the phone he perscribed me a bottle of oramorph. that says it all realy. if u try and fight for what u need some staff have a very bad attitude with u. after this horrific experience if i ever have a stone agian i will stay home and refuse medical intervention. my god what this dept has put me through.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience and I shared your comments with the Operations Manager, who was also disappointed to read about the service you received. Currently the service has received a significant rise in the numbers of patients presenting to the hospital with kidney stones and this has impacted on waiting lists.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and understand that you have been treated now and hope you are recovering well.

Kind regards

Laura White
