"Give antibiotics like sweets"

About: Darlington Memorial Hospital / Accident and emergency

I visited the urgent care centre for an ear infection.

The doctor saw me within 20 minutes. It was about 6.30am so very quiet.

No problem with the registration and being seen to, it all appeared very efficient and the reception staff were friendly.

The doctor diagnosed a middle ear infection and prescribed me with clarithromycin 500mg twice daily. This gave me diarrhoea so I then saw my gp 24 hrs after for advice on continuing the antibiitic as I also have a bowel condition so need to be careful when medication upsets the bowel.

She looked in my ear and said there was not enough infection for the antibiotics and it didn't look like a middle ear infection so advised me to discontinue the clarithromycin.

It is disappointing that the urgent care centre gave our antibiotics so easy in this world of antibiotic resistance. Yes I visited but he could easily have said it's best left to recover itself and if it doesn't come back.

My gp gave me a script for ear spray which i asked for at the urgent care centre only to be told it won't work.

Now I don't know who is wrong here in the diagnosis but it doesn't sound like a middle ear infection as it is bilateral.
