"Giving Birth"

About: Darent Valley Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

One of the worst experience of my life. Not due to pain but due to how hospital staff treated me as a patient. They haven't made any notes of what my wishes are. In my notes I read I discharged myself from the hospital when my contractions started and I didn't even know they signed me in. I was 4 days in labour there and in my notes it said I haven't been in labour at all. They were starting and stopping labour depending on staff availability and I haven't slept for 4 nights. I wanted to have c-section and again they said I didn't want it. I spent there a while and because they kept me in labour for such time my baby born 2 weeks after due date 3, 7kg and went to the special care. I felt that the Midwives I came into contact with didn't care about me, just take your pulse and blood pressure. Only midwives in special care were helpful and treated me like human being. They were trying to screen my baby blood 3x - every time they analysed it. Last time they contaminated the sample. I didn't have much of a choice of what they were doing with me and they didn't care about my dignity. No one was informing me of what is going to happen. Consultant wanted me to give natural birth, although my baby heart rate was dropping with every contraction. It ended with c-section anyway. If you can choose different hospital.

Thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns with regards to the care that you received within our Maternity Department. I am so sorry to hear that you have had such a negative experience. In addition, I am disappointed that there was a lack of care and compassion shown to you during this time. It is certainly not the standard of care that we wish to offer our women. I would very much like to offer you an opportunity to address these issues with a 1:1 appointment. If you feel that this would be of benefit please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01322 428382 or email dgn-tr.pals@nhs.net and an appointment can be arranged.

Kind Regards

Karen Woolway
