"Big thank you to Cardiac Rehab"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Cardiology

(as the patient),

I want to give a big thanks to all the staff  that run the cardiac rehabilitation classes at Hairmyers Hospital. I  suffered a heart attack in January this year, and after surgery and initial recovery I started attending cardiac rehab classes. I was a bit anxious as to what to expect but there was no need. The classes and care  were great, they helped me to learn a lot about what had happened to me, potentially why and what to do to avoid a repeat episode in the future. I also learned how to physically exercise safely giving me  knowledge of  how not to over exert. Also, the staff monitored my recovery every step of the way, making sure my recovery was going to plan. Attending the classes with  others who had been through the same experience was invaluable, being able to talk to someone else who had experienced the same, or similar  cardiac event  to myself really helped me to mentally come to  terms with what had  happened.

One suggestions for making the support and service even better would be to facilitate the cardiac nurses being able to visit patients in the period between the heart event and starting the classes. That period of 4-6 weeks is quite an anxious time and a long time to go without support from health professionals or contact with a group of people who have had the same experience.

Dear Burnbank Man,

Thank you for taking the time to share such positive feedback with us. I'm so pleased that you managed to overcome your anxieties to realize the benefits of the classes and I hope your experience will give others confidence to participate. It's particularly encouraging to note the support you felt able to draw from others attending the classes.

My colleague Kirsty Mcmillan will be able to address your suggestion regarding contact before starting classes. I'll ask her to post a response when she returns from annual leave next week; rest assured we'll share your feedback with all of the team.

I wish you well with your continuing recovery and rehabilitation.

Kind regards

Rick
