"Surgical Abortion - Conscious Sedation"

About: Bpas (merseyside Clinic)

I attended the Merseyside clinic with my friend only. My appointment was at 11am and I was first seen at 11.20, I was given some strong ibuprofen and 2 tablets that I had to place under my tongue and allow to dissolve that softened my cervix, blood pressure and temperature were taken. All my details were checked again and I was asked multiple times if I was ok and had any questions. After this I was allowed to go back into the waiting room with my friend, I was then called again by another female assistant ( I can’t remember her name). This was around 11.40. She took me upstairs into a room, asked me to get changed into a gown and just wait there before my surgery, I was told I was scheduled in at 12.30. Whilst waiting I was asked if I was ok or needed anything. I was then taken into another room that lead into the theatre, this was around 12.20. In the first room, again asked if I was ok and I’d my details were correct. Also asked if I was having any contraception today, which I chose not to have. The procedure of the surgery was explained to me, a cannula placed in my right arm. I was then wheeled through the doors behind me, I met the nurses who again were so lovely but I can’t remember the names, I assumed because of sedation. I was given a strong painkiller through the cannula and the sedation also. Whilst the sedation did not completely whack me out I did feel a little spaced but had pleasant conversations with the 2 nurses next to me. I did not feel any discomfort at all apart from when the speculum was inserted and opened. In total I was in surgery for no longer than 10 minutes. I was then wheeled through to the first recovery room with another assistant, she gave me some water, took my blood pressure and asked if I was ok. After around 15 minutes in there she gave me a pair of cotton knickers that had a built in sanitary towel, I put these on and then got changed. As I stood up from the bed there was blood on the tissue but I was assured this was normal. After getting changed I was taken upstairs to the second recovery room, I was given a drink and biscuits were on the table to help yourself too. My friend was also allowed to come and sit with me. After 15 mins or so in there the discharge nurse called me in, removed the cannula, talked me through my aftercare with the presence of my friend also (which I was grateful for as I had come round mostly after sedation but still felt a little bit dazed). I was then allowed to leave when I felt ok. I was at the clinic a total is 2.5hours.

Please ladies do NOT be worried about this procedure. The staff are absolutely wonderful, so warming and helpful.

There is parking at this facility but only a small amount of spaces, there is street parking available though. The clinic is also very easy to find.
