In Jul 2015, I was unfortunately diagnosed with an incurable (but treatable) blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma, and have been treated in the haematology/oncology department at Queens Hospital (Romford) ever since.
Prior to retiring, I worked for various British and Overseas companies, and had private premium healthcare insurance with all of them.
During this period I had treatments/investigations at my two local private hospitals (nr Woodford) as well as at Harley Street in London for various (non cancer) conditions.
And I think it's fair to say that the NHS treatment for my myeloma that I'm receiving at Queens, is at least as good as any of the treatments that I've received in the past from private sector suppliers, and in some cases better, in terms of 'overall quality' and convenience.
The haematology/oncology department is well run and managed...
Everyone from the people on the front reception desk, to the nurses, the secretaries and other admin' staff play their part in the 'team'.
I get appointment letters well in advance of hospital meetings, and copies of all clinical letters from my consultant to my GP, soon after the consultant's meetings.
I know in this review that I'm not allowed to mention any names, but I need to particularly thank my consultant and specialist nurse(s) for their very caring and professional dealings with me.
My consultant's treatment plans have been very effective so far (and hopefully will continue as such!), and my regular visits to the specialist nurse for chemo' injections and general well-being assessments are efficient and well run.
Notwithstanding the above, one of real benefits to me (and my wife - who always accompanies me to the hospital) is that my consultant (and specialist nurse), always make time to listen to any concerns that we have regarding: my treatments, side effects, or future plans concerning managing this miserable disease.
I say this because I know each of the clinicians has a very heavy workload, so making time for every patient can't be an easy task.
But my consultant does - and for this reason I'm particularly grateful - for the caring and constructive approach that my wife and I are always shown.
So thank you to all in the Queen's haematology/oncology department.
