My elderly parent was admitted following GP recommendations as concerns about dehydration due to high temp. Relatives were left in waiting area for over 2hrs without any information. I approached a staff nurse in the corridor who didn't work in CAU but kindly took the time to make enquiries on my behalf & we were quickly ushered through.
When enquiring about tests/treatment plan, a different staff nurse was abrupt in manner which left me feeling very frustrated given that we had waited patiently for 2hrs. I am always sympathetic to how busy staff are, I worked in a hospital myself & my husband is a nurse. I would never be dismissive in this way to a relative or patient & in the time it took to be abrupt they could've easily been kind & understanding. The nurse went on to admit no-one had said we were waiting. Why not just ask.
I'm sorry to say that the basics were lacking, plenty of young students walking up & down yet no concern shown that there was no water provided until requested. No 'assistance required' written on the white board despite it being requested to alert others of this basic need & protect my relative's safety. The junior doctor & consultant were excellent, explaining situation & allowing time for questions. The attitude of a couple of staff did not enthuse me to leave my elderly relative in their care and no-one should feel like that.
These people coming through your doors everyday are people, someone's loved one and this basic fact should never be forgotten. It might be your relative next time!
