"no help at all but made me worst"

About: Whiston Hospital / Accident and emergency

I visited the unit with few issues - 20 weeks pregnant, the baby was moving less, persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest discomfort unable to take deep breath, coughing up green phlegm, explained that I straggle to cough it out, my lungs didn't sound clear according to GP who examined me at 9:30 in a walk in centre and who sent me to A&E

I had a bad experience and I complained in writing but the answer wasn't satisfactory. What was achieved after my written complaint was offering blankets which you have to request from the reception.

What did happen?

11 hours waiting on cold which caused me a very painful throat, runny nose, freezing sense and shaking (10 p.m till 7 a.m. seen from a doctor, had some tests and waited till 9 a.m., 2 hours in another cold area away from the front door), 6 hours after arriving I was asked what is the pain from 0 to 10, I said 5 and in the books is written that I had pain from 0 to 2?!

Inadequate reception staff - I complained few times that I am cold and I have worsened throat pain, I suffer from anxiety/depression registered with GP and all the scenes I see upset me, I feel uncomfortable and exhausted. I was walking and crying most of the time in the waiting area, being upset and freezing cold. Nobody believed me that I suffer while I was waiting (9 hours).

I also got the impression that not all the reception staff is busy with actual work (talking not work related subjects and ignoring waiting patients). That is how NHS experience funds difficulties.

My blood test came back that I do not have an infection. The doctor said I am fine and I can go home without any treatment and to come back if I have chest pain (I said chest discomfort and shortness of breath which I do not understand why were not taken into consideration). When I went home I had a runny nose like a river, I was freezing cold and shaking. I think the decision was unsuitable for my condition and the fact that I am pregnant and the immune system cannot fight as usual.

One day later I noticed that I have temperature above 37 but less than 38. On the 3rd day I had 38.4 and I went to a GP in Walk in centre, who was obviosly shocked from my experience in A&E. I received a stronger antibiotic and 24 hours later my baby was again active, I coughed out plenty of phlegm and I had noticed improvement in my breathing.

I wouldn't recommend going to A&E with similar symptoms, Walk in centre would be a better decision.

Being pregnant with combined symptoms do not give you a priority in A&E Whiston hospital, I was seen last but not least from all the patients for the whole night. I have information from 3 different ladies that in Warrington hospital you get priority even if you are pregnant with no pregnancy related symptoms. Have it in mind if you need to jump to A&E.
