"Three days mixed experience. Overall, 3 stars."

About: Marie Stopes International Brixton Centre

I had a number of appointments at the clinic.

Day 1: I was seen quite quickly and the nurse was helpful and informative. She seemed pretty patient as I did ask lots of questions. I asked for a photo of the scan cause I wasn't 100% decided at that time. She gave it to me but I appreciate why it's not normal practice. Overall experience, good.

Day 2: I was seen quickly again but this lady wasn't as warm. She was very clinical and patronising and I felt dismissed when I asked questions. I had been on holiday hence the delay in my abortion but I'd been informed while away that I'd contracted an infection from my partner. The helpline weren't able to offer advice so as you can imagine I was anxious to ask what happens next. Because I had googled what happens when you have an abortion with an untreated infection I expected more advice, not to just be bunged in the surgery room. So I spoke up and told the nurse I had an infection which see seemed to be unaware of despite having access to my details. The nurse started explaining how the infection could spread but barely even looked at me. She was glued to the screen and still seemed to be processing the paperwork to go ahead with the abortion. I had to stop her and ask to speak to a doctor. I was told to wait outside and she will have a word. I was moved to the area where the ladies going in for surgery sit, so still being moved along despite my reservations. The nurse called me back in and said that she had spoken to the doctor who's happy to treat me. By now I was tearful and furious. I reiterated that I would like to speak to the doctor because I'm concerned about potential complications. She said alright have a seat. She then came to collect me again and said that the doctor said she will treat me for my infection as my concerns were understandable. Had I not spoken up they would've gone ahead and caused me to have health complications!! Anyway, I was given a course of treatment and told to return in 7 days. As I was leaving I was called in again. The nurse said oops sorry I've just checked the system and you need to take these as well. I went home angry, sad, felt very anxious and unsafe. Over all experience, terrible.

Day 3: Again, I was seen quickly which was good and to my surprise they enquired about my infection and whether I finished the course of treatment. It was the same nurse as the last time so I was a bit iffy. She did seem a bit more patient. The surgery went okay but I felt like further information could be given about the medication they used. Due to my complications with meds in the past I declined to have the pain relief meds and wasn't advised properly. In the end I ended up having to self administer (at the clinic) because I was in a lot of pain. You can't eat before but post op they offer biscuits and juice. They don't have many allergen free options so if you're like me, you'll stay hungry. Overall experience, okay. Talk to the other ladies, they're more caring than nurses
