I recently had my tonsils out at Fairfield, following surgery I woke with excruciating pain. I had been warned that pain was to be expected but not to this degree. In recovery, soon after waking i was asked if i had pain but not to what extent i was just told it was normal and was given some oral pain relief. A few minutes later, still in agony as the pain relief hadn't stared to take effect i was wheeled back to the ward area. On arrival there i was asked if i was in pain to which i replied yes, the nurse took my observations, gave me some more pain relief and a drink then left. At no point was i asked my pain score! It was nearly an hour before the pain killers took effect at which point I wanted to leave but nobody had come back to see me. I tried to get the attention of staff but when anybody came into the bay they avoided eye contact, I couldn't reach the call bell as i was attached to a drip and couldn't speak loud due to my surgery. The patient next to me helped by getting somebody's attention. I asked could i leave and was told i would need to eat first, so i asked for some food! I also had to ask to have my drip taken down as blood was moving up it.
I was given rushed and basic post operative advice.
My mum was told she wasn't allowed to see me, despite coming to pick me up and all other patients having visitors.
Overall, i felt my pain was not managed effectively post op care was below standard.
