"Had emergency surgery ."

About: Warrington Hospital / General surgery

I went into warrington SAU on sat 28th April having been sent from Halton hospital with suspected appendicitus.I arrived and sat in waiting room for an hour in which my husband had to ask if i could have trolley as i was in a lot of pain which i was kindly given. We waited for a long period of time to see doc as they see patients inbetween surgery which is not very effective when people are not able to eat or drink and in pain and it must b very difficult for the doctors to manage what at times must be extremely challanging for them. Was told i was going to the ward about 9 oclock, i heard the nurse phone to give my details but was very shocked to hear her discuss that i was on sertraline for depression this was also next to an open plan waiting area which i felt was not appropriate i suffered anxiety for a very personal issue and think this needs to be reviewed how information is shared asap. On the ward the nurse was lovely but i wasnt told where the toilets were and patients were sleeping so didnt want to disturb them by asking . Was then given a scan which was done promptly i was told i had appendicitus and would have surgery in morning at half 8. Was given no pain relief through night and was finally given morphine in morning by a doctor and an apology . As on emergency list finally had op at half five had not eaten or drank for 31 hours . Surgical staff were all outstanding and professional couldnt falt them . Was back room approx 8 got tea but no food . During the night asked for painrelief wasnt given till few hours later i understand budget cuts but it was obvious that staff were over stretched and simply was not enough of them on duty. In the morning spoke briefly to surgeons who i asked if i could return home as was tired and no tv to distract me was difficult an hour like a day . Was told i could go after lunch but took till 5 to get my tablets which again needs to be reviewed as hospitals often state bed shortage but disarge takes all day ! May be hospitals should have discharge team would prob save a lot of money and resources . Went home with letter for gp and tablets but no advice about wound care or what signs to look out for if unwell. I feel the staff all worked very hard and in no doubt alongside challenging times i feel how difficult their shifts must be it just seemed there was not enough organisation and communication. I also felt so sorry for the patients in there for weeks at a time without a tv to pass the very long often lonely time . I have never given a feed back before but just feel the trust needs to support the wonderful staff they have in a more effective way.
