"Emergency prescription lost for type 1 diabetic..."

About: Gudgeheath Lane Surgery

Called the surgery on Thursday lunchtime to ask for advice about getting a new insulin pen as mine had broken at work (labouring, working on building sites) I was told "we don't deal with prescription requests over the phone, you need to come into the surgery" - fine.

I asked my girlfriend to write me out what I needed - as the surgery had advised was fine to do, and then hand it into reception on Friday morning to receive the emergency prescription pen on the Friday afternoon - well, the emergency request was put in on Thursday afternoon and I still haven't received my insulin pen by following Monday as they had lost my prescription request on the Friday morning (after calling on Friday afternoon to see if it had been completed and can be picked up) to then be told it will be dealt with then and there and I can pick it up at the pharmacy tomorrow morning (Saturday morning) and after giving them the benefit of the doubt & thinking that maybe they had got their act together and actually put in for my emergency prescription I didn't call on the Saturday morning, I just went straight to the pharmacy. Guess what? No insulin pen.

I was told it was put in "late last night" (being Friday night) after being told that it would be dealt with straight away on the Friday afternoon once they had disclosed to me that they had actually lost my emergency prescription request.

So, I called the pharmacy Monday afternoon (today) to ask if my pen was ready to pick up - surprise surprise...no pen. I'm now being told that the pen I use has been discontinued by the manufacturers and the prescription has been sent back to the surgery to change it.

I have struggled to administer my insulin over the past nearly 5 days (will probably be 6 by the time I actually receive anything) of which I inject 3 times daily and a different pen at night.

I've not asked for painkillers of which alternatives are available, this is a case of if I don't get my insulin I will die.

I've been diabetic for 10 years and have moved to Fareham 4 months ago from London. I have never received such shoddy, complacent and dismissive attitude and behaviour from a doctor's surgery. I rely on insulin to live and work and provide for my family and through not being able to get the correct dose from my insulin pen that is smashed to bits (completely in half as well as other parts missing from it) by not being able to get a replacement has totally messed with my body.

If you can help it, don't sign up to this surgery if you need ongoing medical prescriptions, they won't be deemed as priority.

I am sorry that you did not receive the standard of service from the Surgery which we endeavour to provide and that your prescription was 'lost' in the Surgery. It was very unfortunate that when the prescription was sent to the pharmacy on the Monday that the particular make of pen had been discontinued by the supplier and I apologise for any inconvenience this caused.

I would like to assure you that I will be communicating your frustrations to my staff and will try to ensure that this situation does not occur again for any patient.

I am unable to comment further as the comment from the patient is, of course, anonymous.

All complaints received from Patients to the Practice are dealt with by me personally. Practice Manager.
