I was admitted via A&E as an unplanned case due to elevated temperature and feeling unwell. I have metastatic bowel cancer and on active chemotherapy treatment.
I was quickly assessed using the FEWS score and my score was 7 indicating that I was quite unwell. I was taken to resus and stabilised over the next few hours and felt much better. The staff treating me were both professional and compassionate in approach. I felt reassured and confident that I was being well cared for as my condition improved. I was then transferred to admissions ward 1 overnight. Again, the care was first class. I was then transferred to ward 51. From the moment of admission, the staff went out of their way to provide me with reassurance, care and compassion. In addition to this hospital admission I am going through what is arguably the worst experience of my life in dealing with stage 4 bowel cancer and the prognosis, physical and emotional challenges that it brings. The nurses and nursing assistants provided me with their time and made me feel that I really did matter to them. I was always listened to and my needs were fully met. The nurses were very friendly, professional and competent in their care and nothing was too much trouble for them. There are no suggestions for improvement. My only advice would be, not to change a thing!
