"Gate 37"

About: Pinderfields General Hospital / Accident and emergency

Having been seen really quickly in A&E things got off to a good start. i was given Codeine on an empty stomach none of which were logged. I was then transferred to Gate 37 and the trouble really started. Having taken the medication, I started to feel really unwell. I was sweating and in horrendous pain. I was very unsure why I had been taken there but experiencing the pain i was, i left the little side ward and when towards the work station. Lots of people sat there, not one person acknowledged my obvious distress until i was told I couldnt sit there! I was even finding it hard to breathe properly and told to wait for the Doctor and 5 people were in front of me. I went back to my bed. The lady I was later to be told was in charge of my care, told me Codeine doesnt give such side effects. Another very kind lady said it does have this effect on some people. The pain was in a totally different region to the pain i went to A&E for. They came back after speaking to a Doctor and offered me Morphine saying it could give similar side effects as the Codeine. How can the same lady say that to me? I declined and then was left for hours on nil by mouth including water. I was desperate for a drink but told no! No explanation as to why. The hours went on and I had no idea why i was even there. A&E said no surgery and gave me a run down of my issues. I asked to go home as by now I hadnt eaten for 24 hours and had no idea why i was banned. Apparently even water would prevent more pain. Think the Codeine took well care of that job and gave me the worse pain and panic! I was offered a mouth refresher which was very welcome. At the time this was being done, i was being asked questions by the lady in charge of my care. My partner started to answer (do i wear glasses etc) some due to my distress and having a sponge in my mouth. He got told off for replying saying i had to answer for myself. Where is the care? No assessment no explanation no log of the medication given to me. I signed myself out, Disgusting care. I advise anyone with a choice of which Hospital to visit, stay clear of Pinderfields. This is even worse care than the last time i was unfortunate enough to have to visit after a nasty reaction to Penicillin. None of which was logged either!

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding your experience on Gate 37.

From what you have described in your posting, it is clear that the treatment you received was not adequate and fell below that which we aspire to deliver.

Please accept my sincere apologies for your experience.

I wonder if speaking to our PALS team would help.

They can advise on how to take your concerns further and if this is something you would like to do, please do contact them on 01924 542972 or via email on pals@midyorks.nhs.uk.

Thank you again.

Kind regards

Clare Blackburn
