"St James (Leeds) A and E- fantastic care, thank you"

I had problems with my kidneys as a child (Nephrotic Syndrome FSGS), and attended the pediatric, moving onto the adult, renal units for around 10 years at St James. I recently started having, what felt like the same pain I used to experience as a child. Worried about my kidneys I went to A and E.

To complicate matters I also suffer from schizophrenia, and am very frightened of hospitals, finding it difficult not to believe that there are cameras in the light fittings.

When I arrived at A and E reception I explained my concerns to the receptionist who was very understanding and pointed me in the direction of the nursing staff. The nurse I spoke to showed me to a private room where I could wait, I feel this was very caring of her.

I didnt have to wait long until the nurses assessed me, taking a urine sample/ bloods etc- I think I jumped the queue which once again showed a real understanding of mental health problems and I felt was above and beyond the call of duty. I then saw a doctor who explained my blood results- luckily all is ok- probably just a water infection, which was causing the pain. The doctor was also very nice and understanding trying to put my mind at rest about the cameras which she didnt have to do.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the staff who were involved in my care, from the receptionist to the nurses and doctor, and to let them all know how much their attitudes and understanding of schizophrenia have been appreciated. I really hope this message reaches them.
