I had my leg broken while playing football on 9th December 2017. To put it plainly, I had obtained a third knee and was unable to move! Someone phoned for an ambulance and was told it would be two hours before I could be seen - not the ideal start. Luckily for me there was an NHS doctor on the next pitch who patched me up sufficiently for me to be bundled into the back of a car and driven to A&E.
Once at A&E the care I received was fantastic. The doctors and nurses were very caring and attentive. I was straight into x-ray where a very friendly radiologist took some x-rays. When I was delivered back to A&E a fractures specialist doctor spoke with me and went through what was to happen next.
I really cannot fault the A&E staff.
From A&E I was put onto ward T3 Surgical - I was there from Saturday until Wednesday. All of the staff there were great too.
The nurses and HCAs were friendly, attentive and caring. And, when you're stuck in a bed, I found my best source of entertainment was talking to everyone who came into the room - doctors, porters, cleaners etc. All of them very friendly.
I would like to give a mention to the fractures doctor who saw me in A&E who, despite his busy schedule, made sure he came to see me right before I went into surgery. Seeing him, even for those two minutes, put me at ease.
Since being discharged I've had to go back to the hospital for check ups on the healing and for physiotherapy.
The clinic I visit is Fracture Clinic 7 which doesn't always run on time and was particularly busy over the Christmas period. But the doctors and nurses there all work very hard to make sure everyone is seen on time. And despite the physiotherapist, probably, seeing hundreds of people a week she always remembers what work we have done previously and is pushing me forward with my recovery.
The injury I sustained was a pretty horrible one but during my stay at NMH and in my continued recovery the care I have received in every department has been great. It makes things so much easier for me knowing that there is a fantastic staff caring for me and willing me better.
"Tib-Fib leg break, great care"
