I was referred to the breast care unit following a routine mammogram and, apart from the occasional long wait to be seen, it is obviously a very well run dept. I was given the diagnosis in a straightforward manner and told all that would follow. I had surgery on 14th March and I would also like to thank the anaesthetist who took time to listen to my concerns and ensured I was comfortable. I'm now ready to start radiotherapy.
I don't want to include this part in the public review, but I am curious about what happened. Immediately before the operation I was to have a lymph node injection in medical physics at 9am followed by a wire attachment in the breast care unit at 9.30am. I had queried the timings of these as they are quite a distance apart and I walk with a cane, but was told they would be waiting for me and knew my schedule. However, I was in medical physics at 8.50 but I was not seen until 9.25, making me late for the next procedure. It was then a long walk to the breast care unit, and a long walk back to day surgery.
After surgery I woke up in the recovery room at 12.45 but I was not collected until 1.50pm to be taken all the way over to Branston ward. I felt a little abandoned as I couldn't see or hear anyone for a time.I had previously been told I would stay in the day surgery unit so I don't understand why I was moved as I didn't see a doctor and the nurse asked me if I expected to go home that day or not.
"Thanks to the Breast Care Unit."
