"Thanks to the Breast Care Unit."

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Breast surgery

I was referred to the breast care unit following a routine mammogram and, apart from the occasional long wait to be seen, it is obviously a very well run dept. I was given the diagnosis in a straightforward manner and told all that would follow. I had surgery on 14th March and I would also like to thank the anaesthetist who took time to listen to my concerns and ensured I was comfortable. I'm now ready to start radiotherapy.

I don't want to include this part in the public review, but I am curious about what happened. Immediately before the operation I was to have a lymph node injection in medical physics at 9am followed by a wire attachment in the breast care unit at 9.30am. I had queried the timings of these as they are quite a distance apart and I walk with a cane, but was told they would be waiting for me and knew my schedule. However, I was in medical physics at 8.50 but I was not seen until 9.25, making me late for the next procedure. It was then a long walk to the breast care unit, and a long walk back to day surgery.

After surgery I woke up in the recovery room at 12.45 but I was not collected until 1.50pm to be taken all the way over to Branston ward. I felt a little abandoned as I couldn't see or hear anyone for a time.I had previously been told I would stay in the day surgery unit so I don't understand why I was moved as I didn't see a doctor and the nurse asked me if I expected to go home that day or not.

Thank you for posting your feedback about your recent visit to the Breast Unit. I am pleased that you felt that it was well run.

However there are a couple of points which you mention which I would like to discuss personally with you, if possible?

Could I please ask you to contact the PALS team at Lincoln (01522 707071, or pals@ulh.nhs.uk) with your details, quoting reference CO518009. They will then pass this information on to me to contact you directly.

Thank you again for taking the time to post your comments.

Best regards,

Julie Housham,

Clinic Sister, Breast Unit
