"Ward improving"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital

Dear NHS Choices

Previous visits have not been so admirable. I would like to emphasise that things have definitely improved. Mum was not in G Wards before so I cannot compare. Certainly admission and deployment to a ward for treatment was very quick this time I think the new CEO is making inroads. I don’t know how, but QA definitely has a better all round atmosphere than it did last August. We’ve experienced several wards.

D8 was the worst. Fire fighting I would say. A nurse actually removed a plaster applied to my mums post surgery wound (shouldn’t have been a plaster), and degloved the leg and intricate surgery. I think this was kept quiet, although my poor old mum didn’t when the nurse Stripped it off!

It took another 3 months for her to heal. She was discharged to Petersfield and the nurses repaired the damage. Finally discharged December 2017. But this was self discharge, and I didn’t realise because the sister didn’t say. It would have helped because not3 weeks in and Mum was falling and sustaining injury. Apart from the Cholacarcenoma found in her pancreas, she simply was not stable on her feet. In reality the OT should have said to me then Mum wasn’t really ready. But I think pressure on bed availability resulted in an A1 condition discharge. Subsequent falls, of which my mum has chosen not to tell me have resulted in failing health, culminating in the most Admission.

To conclude. I think the brutal truth is better for NOK and relatives to know. We have to make arrangements and judgement on the professional advice of our nursing staff.

I think to mitigate risk of suing, nursing staff and consultants have to be protected when diagnosis and prognosis is given. Their information is invaluable to the most informed of us and we act accordingly.

Finally, I’m a mod civil Servant, SEO, and approaching 37 years of service. I’m glad give my pay rise to the Front line and support NHS. I work a 14 hour day trying to cover my duty, but I can honestly say, my efforts pale into insignificance compared to the dedication and professionalism of the NHS.
