"Not treated seriously after an operation"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

So after 3 years of pain they decided to finally give me an operation. I have no clue what they done because they never told me anything. Today I had to go get my cast changed after 3 weeks, they didn’t even know I was coming and said it was another date but finally they found it and I got it off. The staff were very rude and treated me like it was my fault they couldn’t find me and never apologised for making me wait or telling me I had no appointment. I got the cast off with the expectation I was getting another one on because that is what I was told. Apparently not, they asked me if I had my other shoe but I didn’t because I was told it was going to take 6 weeks to heal and 6 weeks before I could walk but after I said no I didn’t bring it they made a very rude comment and ignored the part about being 6 weeks. Well they sent me home in pain with no support of my ankle. I tried to tell them that the pain killers weren’t working so I couldn’t walk on my foot and they were extremely rude and ignored me. They couldn’t wait to get me anyway, no explanation, no respect and no information about anything. They don’t take me seriously because I am young

Dear Sir/Madam

I apologise for the poor experience that you refer to in your message. I would like to assure you that this is not the patient experience that we strive to achieve within orthopaedics and trauma.

I would appreciate if you could provide me with more details so that I can investigate further. Can you provide me with your name, which area you attend and who are staff members that you are referring too.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Ann McLean

Update posted by Patient at ninewells (the patient)

So I have wrote something on here before not long ago, about a week ago. My last story was about my cast and the rude staff of the plaster room. I think it’s been nearly 2 weeks since I got my cast off, my foot is now completely messed up. My shoes don’t fit and I physically cannot get them on. I can’t stand without support and I am having to go outside in a wheelchair and I am very weak at the moment and can’t walk outside with the zimmer. I was supposed to have crutches but I didn’t get a call about them until a day before my cast came off so it was too late. The surgeon that operated on my ankle told me not to use the zimmer but I have absolutely no choice. I nearly died 1 week before my cast came off because of pain killers and this hospital asked nothing about it and said it was a “bad reaction” but it certainly was not just a bad reaction. I lost all feeling in the left side of my body and the op was on my right so I couldn’t stand at all. While I was in the hospital, I asked if they could check my cast as it was very tight at the toes and very loose at the top, I could fit my whole arm in until the ankle. They refused to take my cast off and said it was normal. When I actually got my cast off a week later, I got home and noticed the state of my foot. My toes are crushed, I’m pretty sure I have nerve damage and half of my foot is completely numb, it’s swollen and as I said I can’t even get my shoe on. The pain is unreal and the tingling where the cut is, literally stops me from falling asleep. I have phoned about my foot so many times In the past week and no-one will talk to me and still, I feel the nurses and such are not taking me seriously. I knew my foot wasn’t right and that’s why I posted about it before, now it’s worse and the pain when I stand on it is unbearable. The doctors have still done nothing and I’m not a cheeky person, I’m respectful to people and feel I get nothing but attitude back when it comes to this hospital. I am going to have to take this further as I can’t be treated like this constantly. I may be young but that doesn’t make it right to treat me like this. I have complained on more than one occasion and nothing gets done. I hope I am walking within the next two weeks because I can’t live my life like this, especially if I’m being ignored and brushed off.
