"I feel treatment stopped short"

About: Phoenix Futures

(as other),

I have experienced a certain treatment program stopping short of sustained recovery in my opinion.

I was referred to this program (Phoenix Futures Glasgow) in 2006. I found the initial 6 months of the program which was residential based fitted my recovery needs at the time very well.

Where it fell short for me personally was the after care. Once I'd left the residential and moved into my own flat the care rapidly decreased and contact was soon lost with the program altogether.

Shortly after this I relapsed, but I want to make this clear - I in no way blame the after care for me relapsing, I just believe that certain things could've been done differently for me personally. Once the first signs of my relapse were known to the program, all contact was cut completely, (which in many ways I understand) but don't necessarily agree with.

After care is a pivotal part of sustained recovery and in my opinion if the after care is lacking the chance of relapse increases.

Response from Marion Logan, Director of Operations Scotland, Phoenix Futures

Thank you for raising the importance of after-care. I am sorry to read that you did not received the support you needed in 2006. I hope that subsequently you were able to get the support you needed. As you maybe aware the Residential Services within Phoenix Futures have undergone significant change since then and one of those changes has been around ensuring the neccesary aftercare is in place for each individual when they leave. Clearly people's needs vary, however we do recognise that discussions have to take place long before someone leaves to find out what sort of support is needed, from whom, with what frequency etc.

For example ,support is available for people once they move into a new tenancy, we have a Recovery Social Night every Saturday and are extending our range of peer support groups, details available if you want to conact me.

If you would like to find out more about what has changed and indeed visit the service please do get in touch with the service - it is still in the same place and we would love to show you around. Please visit www.phoenix-futures.org.uk Thank you
