"Treated by fantastic NHS staff after I broke my leg"

About: North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust Tameside General Hospital / Accident and emergency Tameside General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Recently my husband and I came down from Sunderland to Stalybridge to visit our family. On Friday 8th July we went for a walk along the canal in Uppermill and I had a rather nasty accident near the stepping stones in the park, breaking both the bones in my left leg (a comminuted distal tib/fib of my left leg). The care I received was second to none.

The ambulance crew were first rate - thanks Paul and Sarah - and after managing to "rescue" me from the awkward, narrow slope where I was lying they transfered me to Tameside hospital.

At first I was a little bit apprehensive as the A&E is currently undergoing building work but I was soon to be treat with the utmost professionalism and care that I think anyone could have. The A&E staff were brilliant and helped both myself and my husband.

I was transfered up to the Elective Unit where I was met by the staff nurse Donna and introduced to other members of the team.

During my 11 night stay on this ward and following 2 operations to my leg I want to say that I have never met such a lovely group of people. From the domestic (Carole) who I saw every day and who not only cleans the ward but virtually sterilises it,the auxilary staff, student nurses, right up to Mr Ebizie the surgeon, everyone was helpful, caring and very professional.

The ward was spotlessly clean and everyone who works there could not do enough for me (and others on the ward).

Special thanks go to Avril, Donna, Ray,Rosemary, Rose Lee, Gemma,Sue Janet, Debbie, both Marie's, Jenny, Janice and Veronica (sorry if I missed any of you lovely people out).

Cath Edge has a fantastic team of people working for/with her.

The physio guys also need a mention as they are all patient and really helpful

I know that people are always quick to complain and we dont give praise where it is due and that is the reason for my story. All hospitals have problems, but my stay in Tameside has really restored my faith in the NHS.

Thank you to everyone who had a hand in my care.

Thank you for posting these comments – I am very pleased to read that you feel we have amazing staff at Tameside Hospital. I will make sure the staff concerned see your kind comments about the high standards of care they achieved when you were a patient with us

Of course, this is what our staff strive to achieve all the time, but I am sure they will all welcome the fact that you have acknowledged their efforts, and I will forward your posting to them so they are aware.

I do hope your leg is now much improved.

Would you like to help the hospital to improve its services further? We are currently looking for patients and carers to become involved in a development called “Patient Stories”. We want to know more about our services from the point of view of those who received them – what was good, bad, what could be improved, what should be changed. Want to know more about what’s involved?
