"Smoking"

About: Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust

We visit regularly with our little one and am puzzled why the hospital spends money plastering no smoking signs outside the main doors when they clearly don’t care.

On every visit, no matter then time of day, people are stood openly smoking directly by the entrance, and in the little outdoor seated area nearby (which has 4 separate no smoking signs displayed prominently).

Surely either the hospital cares if people smoke there or not? If not, why not remove the signs and save money?

We are very sorry you have had cause to raise these concerns regarding visitors smoking on site.

We are acutely aware of the problem and we have implemented a number of measures to address the issue you have raised. These measures include tannoy systems outside main entrances and the signage you have mentioned in your comments. In addition to this, security officers and car park hosts are instructed to carry out regular patrols around the site to discourage smoking.

Unfortunately it is an ongoing issue, as we have no authority to prevent visitors to the hospital from smoking in the grounds. We also have to have a degree of empathy with patients and visitors who may be particularly distressed and use smoking as a mechanism for this.

The Trust’s aim is to discourage smoking on the hospital site and we work within the guidelines of Trust’s policies and procedures.

We do hope this response assures you that we are attempting to deal with the problem and will continue to do so. However, we are very sorry your experience of the hospital was marred by this issue.
