"Degrading, disrespectful and inhuman"

About: Scunthorpe General Hospital / Accident and emergency

I visited A&E recently during a severe mental health crisis and was seen by the crisis team relatively quickly. Despite being extremely suicidal, I was deemed safe to go home and was forced out of the department by two security guards as I refused to leave as a result of my mental illnesses. The security guards were courteous despite the circumstances however the medical “professionals” who I saw were extremely rude, unsupportive and disrespectful. The fact they called security was unfair and degrading. Scunthorpe General A&E treat people in mental health crisis inhumanely by putting them in ‘cubical 10’ which is a small, empty room with no windows or fresh air. There needs to be more support available to mental health patients, such as 1:1 care, more interaction from staff, a more comfortable environment and something to alleviate the boredom, and subsequently causing mental health issues to worsen in an environment which is claustrophobic, clinical and overly clinical. When in crisis, people need warmth, kindness and humanity - those are three things that Scunthorpe General A&E have failed to achieve for a long time. Shame.
