"Complete lack of care"

About: Scunthorpe General Hospital / Maternity care

I attended ward 26 for induction of my first pregnancy at 38 weeks for suspected obstetric cholestasis.

On arrival to the ward we were shown around and shown to a bed before being seen by the doctor ( amazing doctor) fairly promptly. I was then examined by a midwife who said I was already dilating and induction wouldn’t be necessary. I told her I had been experiencing irregular contractions overnight and she suggested I had gone in to labour naturally, so I was to be left to progress but was told I couldn’t go to delivery suite as there was another girl waiting to go before me. That was the last time I was examined or seen by a midwife until about 7pm that night.

My husband asked for me pain relief st 12 lunch and was given paracetamol. He reported I was in more pain around 3pm and was advised I couldn’t have more pain relief and I should have a bath instead. By 5pm I was now in severe pain - my husband yet again went looking for help. It took an hour for anybody to come to me, at which point I was told I wouldn’t be examined as it was an infection risk. I was in severe pain and likely disrupting everyone in that bay. My husband again went for help, this time I was examined and found to be in active labour. The midwives seemed panicked about rushing me to the delivery suite. It was also very undignified to be wheeled through the hospital from one ward to another crying out in pain.

Delivery was horrendous, as my labour had not been monitored all day I was unable to have pain relief until babies heart rate had been checked. Unfortunately I was now pushing and it was not possible to get a good heart rate reading as baby descended. I was strapped to a machine with no pain relief and unable to move. However, the staff in delivery were amazing.

On returning to ward 26 postnstslky at 2.30am we then didn’t see a midwife until we were discharged at 10pm the following day. Nobody checked my stitches, bleeding, nobody checked my mood and well-being, no one observed me caring for or feeding baby, and I was not even told if I would be discharged that day (my husband had to keep asking). On discharge the midwife gave my husband a ton of leaflets and said we seemed ‘pretty clued up’ but to ring if we had problems -

I was in the toilet so didn’t speak to her at all. My discharg paperwork was forged, the midwife had documented she’d examined me and had discussions with me when I’d never even see her. At this point I was so tired and desperate to go home I didn’t even care.

3 days later I was contacted by the hospital as they had discharged me without administering anti-d to protect my future pregnancies. This drug needs to be administered within 72 hours of delivery, I had 3 hours to get in to hospital before this drug would be ineffective. Rushing in to hospital isn’t ideal with a 3 day old especially when I was very sore!! I have complained re. The anti-d but have had no reply. I was also supposed to have a liver scan postnatally but have heard nothing
