"Patient Discharge"

About: Crosshouse Hospital Scottish Ambulance Service University Hospital Ayr

(as a relative),

My husband has been in hospital on and off since last year.

He was last admitted toward the end of 2017.

This has been a very stressful time for both of us, as we both have health issues.

Prior to admission my husband was able to be transported by patient transport in a wheelchair and with a two man crew.

As he attends dialysis three times a week - this device is essential to us.

During this stay in hospital his mobility has deteriorated and he has been deemed to require a stretcher ambulance and crew.

Finally we were told that he could be discharged to my care at home and Homecare was arranged for a few weeks ago.

At 5pm that day we were told that the planned discharge could not take place as patient would had no capacity to accommodate his dialysis sessions.

Ayr Hospital tried to arrange discharge for a few days later. Again no success.

Recently he was transferred back to Crosshouse.

Discharge is being planned for the next few days.

I have now been told that the transport issue is not resolved and my husband may not get home.

Please can you help resolve this issue.

In closing i would like to highlight the following

1) my  husband should be home...there is no medical need for him to be an in patient

2) if he is not discharged he may well lose his homecare leading to further delays

3) I am finding the situation more and more stressful which is affecting my health

4) each week he is in hospital is costing the NHS

5) each week he is in hospital our benefits cannot be paid . This amounts to 215 pounds per week and, despite the fact we have managed this loss of income, this loss is really starting to bits

Please help us

Thank you for posting this feedback and I am sorry to hear that your husband has been unable to get transport planned for his dialysis sessions. We work closely with the dialysis unit to try to accommodate all dialysis journeys for patients who need transport. If you can contact us to give us some details to allow us to look into your husbands needs then we can try to find a solution to help?

Dear marchps46,

Dear marchps46

Thank you for raising this issue on Care Opinion. It is obvious how exasperated you are with the whole experience.

It is clear that you wish your husband to be at home with you and I am so sorry that you have been met with blocks to achieve this. I have seen the responses from my colleagues within the Ambulance Service and they are see that they are keen to ensure this situation is resolved.

I have contacted my colleague Lisa Davidson, General Manager for Medical Services at University Hospital Crosshouse who is responsible for Renal Services and I have asked her to make contact with the ambulance service so that we can work together to address this.
