Despite feeling like a I was wasting NHS time presenting at A&E and being admitted following an intentional overdose, I cannot fault the care I received. Every single member of staff I encountered were warm, friendly and sensitive, and not one of them made any negative comment regarding the fact it was essentially my own fault I was there (very rarely the case when it comes to mental health patients in my previous experience). I was kept fully informed in what was happening in regards to my treatment, and staff went above and beyond, reassuring me that I deserved to be alive, comforting me when I was in obvious distress, taking the time to clean and dress wounds on my arm (which weren’t the reason I was there) and just generally treating me like a human being, all the while being sensitive to the fact that I was there on mental health grounds.
I genuinely cannot thank staff enough for not only saving my life physically, but for being so sensitive and kind and for treating mental health as seriously as you would physical health, thereby in turn making me feel, even for a moment, glad that the overdose didn’t kill me.
I really really cannot recommend the RVI highly enough - absolute heroes!
