"Maternity and Neonatal services"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Maternity Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Paediatrics

(as a service user),

I'd like to thank the staff of the maternity and Neonatal wards who I owe the lives of my two children to. Both had complications during labour and the staff were quick to pick up on problems and address them. I experienced not only the care they gave to my children, the first of whom was very unwell with suspected meningitis so had quite a long stay, but also to myself when I became unwell with an infection after an emergency caesarean.

Aftercare on Polkerris Ward was also fantastic when we moved off the maternity and neonatal ward as was the care provided by various children's health specialists during follow up appointments in the first 2 years.

The staff all work so hard to ensure everyone gets the help and support they need and even when you can see they're rushed off their feet they still do their best to help everyone.
My only slight criticisms would be on my first stay in 2014 where I was on the ward for 5 days, I asked a number of times for clean bedding but didn't get it for quite some time - day 5 it got changed (it was in quite a mess from postpartum bleeding and a lot of milk leakage). Also the showers were often a bit mucky on the original maternity ward which is inevitable with lots of post-birth mothers but probably one thing that needs keeping on top of. I have to say though that the one time I used them on the new ward (after my c-section with my second child in 2017) they appeared to be clean. There was often quite a wait to get in the shower or toilet though, it's a shame they can't provide more but understand space is at a premium.

Dear MyTwoBoys

Thank you for taking the time to post such a lovely review of our Maternity, Neonatal and Paediatrics Services on Care Opinion. It is heartening to read what exceptional care you and your sons have received over the last few years from our staff. I will ensure that your comments are passed on to the Matron's for all 3 areas so that they can in turn share with all relevant staff.

Thank you for also sharing your observations and criticisms of the cleanliness of the ward and the duration it took for your sheets to be changed; we will be taking these on board and improving things where possible. I can fully appreciate how after birth especially one that may have been difficult or traumatic and having a very unwell child you need to be as comfortable as possible in your environment.

Thank you again and I hope all is now well with you and your two boys.

With kind regards

Michaela Brewer, Patient & Family Experience Coordinator

Update posted by MyTwoBoys (a service user)

Thank you. Funnily enough when I received this response I was back on Polkerris Ward! This time with my second son who was admitted with breathing difficulties. We only had to stay in for 24 hours but all the nurses we met during that time were fantastic. You could tell they were rushed off their feet but at the same time they didn't at any point make us feel like we weren't important and they were incredibly patient with my rather upset and wary 16 month old.

We were lucky that our child wasn't seriously ill but seeing how caring they are I can imagine they are a great comfort to those who are unfortunately having to spend much longer periods of time on the ward. Thanks again everyone for all you do.
