"Blood transfusion aftercare"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Acute Medical Initial Assessment

(as the patient),

After having a blood transfusion of 3 bags of blood I have taken a delayed reaction.

I have had a thumping headache, throbbing pains in my feet & then I had extreme itching all over but worse on my face & neck. I had to attend my GP as I did not know of any side effects & wasn't told of any on leaving the day ward.

I looked on other NHS sites & many of them supply information on leaving the hospital after a transfusion, maybe it would be a good idea to give this information out in Aberdeen as well.

Dear Whippy55

Many thanks for contacting us and bringing this to our attention. I am sorry to hear that you suffered a delayed reaction to the blood transfusion and that you required to seek further medical attention.

Your symptoms sound very distressing and I do hope that you are feeling better.

I am disappointed to hear that you didn't receive any advice on completion of your transfusion and I will speak directly to the team to ensure we have information including potential side effects available for our patients in future.

With best wishes

Fiona Robertson Chief Nurse
