I recently was admitted to The Women’s health Unit Ward for a vaginal hysterectomy, transobturator tape plus anterior and posterior colporrhaphy procedures. I found the staff very pleasant, the ward clean light and airy and surprisingly unlike some people the food was quite nice!

Dr Hanna, my consultant was a true gent and when I had post operative complications after leaving hospital said I could get in touch with him at any time and he would phone me back, which he did. He also popped in at weekend to the hospital ward to see his ladies on his own time which was marvellous. There was an auxillary nurse there who ran around all day, nothing was to much trouble and she always had a smile on her face. Unfortunately I cant remember her name but she was brilliant.

The only thing I can complain about is the check in procedure for operations. The day of your op you are told not to eat or drink from midnight the night before and arrive at the ward by 7.30am which I did. I was then told to wait in the general waiting room which I did. no one came to tell me when I would actually get on to the ward and it was in fact after 3.00pm before I did so! This meant I had been sitting in the waiting room for over seven and a half hours! I then did not get my op until 5.30pm and was told I could not have anything to eat or drink till the following morning which meant I had been without food or drink for 32 hours even though I had not had a general anaesthetic.

I think it would be better to stagger the times of admissions to say 7.30pm for morning ops and 12noon for afternoon ops and allow a drink for people who are not having general anaesthetic as I was told by my anaesthetist that I could have a drink before my op and a drink and some food after. When I asked the nurse on the ward she said this was not possible. But all in all an excellent hospital.

Thank you for posting these comments. I am glad that you felt Tameside to be an excellent hospital. The staff obviously gave a very good standard of care, which is what we have come to expect from this area. I will ensure that Dr Hanna and the ward staff are made aware of your kind comments.

The issue about pre operative starving is a worrying one, and I will ask the staff in the area to look into this and change the procedure to avoid this occurring for other patients
