"Good ambulance care, but felt forgotten in A&E"

About: Emergency ambulance service (Gloucestershire) Gloucestershire Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I'd awoken with upper chest pain, particularly when I was breathing in. I phoned 999, and GWAS responded extremely promptly.

I received an ECG in the back of the ambulance, which I was told was ok, so my problem was probably not coronary in nature, and, after having my chest listened to, I was then taken to the A&E department at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, and taken straight to a cubicle.

My experience with GWAS was faultless.

Having had blood taken for tests, and a chest x-ray taken whilst in A&E at GRH, I did feel almost forgotten about at times. The cubicle was cleaned whilst I was in it, though the cleaner didn't speak to me, let alone ask if I minded.

I had little contact with the staff in A&E after I was brought back from having the X-Ray until I was discharged. I would have felt reassured had I been told on returning from X-Ray that my chest X-ray had been ok, or that this was still being processed. I've got to say I felt at times as if I'd been forgotten about whilst in A&E.

When I was discharged I was told that the chest x-ray looked fine, and advised to take painkillers as I may have a minor irritation of the lining of the lungs, following a cold a few weeks earlier.

Two weeks later, after continuously taking painkillers, and having a chesty cough that got worse, and feeling flu like, I've seen my GP who has prescribed a course of antibiotics to clear the chest infection as 'there are noises in there that shouldn't be'.

So, great treatment from GWAS, though Gloucestershire Royal Hospital A&E could do with a little more patient focus.

Dea St Micheal,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on the care you received by the ambulance service and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

I am pleased that the nature of your complaint turned out not to be too serious and that the ambulance crew responded to your symptoms in a prompt and professional manner.

It is always disappointing when the patient's experience of the NHS is not what they expected, and I will ensure that Gloucestershire Royal Hospital are aware of your comments and concerns.

Once again thank you for using Patient Opinion as we value comments on our service.
