"preventing drug wastage"

About: Rotherham PCT

(as other),

The waste/duplication/inefficiency I want to tell you about is:

Prescribing of drugs and lack of monitoring systems to prevent wastage.

I know about this because I had to take two full carrier bags of unused drugs to the chemist after a patient entered residential care.

Response from Helen Wyatt, Manager, Patient and Public Involvement , Quality Assurance Team, Rotherham Clinical Commissioning Group We are preparing to make a change

This comment was posted from our Stakeholder event in June. We are asking for help in identifying waste and inefficiencies within health services, as we want to make provide the best value we can for public money.

A full report of the event has been sent to attendees and NHS Rotherham Board. Details of specific actions and issues have also been passed to commissioning staff for action.

Specific Issues Raised Above

There were a lot of comments made around waste relating to prescription medication. All these have been passed to our medications lead. From what you say, it may be that we need to remind people around ordering repeat prescriptions effectively, and discourage stockpiling of medication.

Many thanks for your comments.
