i was getting some corn beef out of a can for my dogs tea and my hand slipped and lacerated my thumb approx 3 inches long and deep which caused a huge bleed. After I had try to stop the bleeding with no joy i realised I needed to go to A&E.
I live in Lincoln so I went up to Lincoln Hospital A&E. Unfortunately the A&E department were extremely busy and the waiting room was completely full with a sign of a 4 hour wait. I left without booking in and thought I would wait until the morning to go to GP. The concern I had was the amount of blood that kept leaking out of my make shift first aid.
Although i was frustrated about the potential waiting time I would have had it was clear there were many people in there that appeared not to have a requirement for the A&E department, and no doubt were wasting the staffs time being there.
I spoke to a friend (nurse) she advised I tried the UCC which she called on my behalf and they informed her that they would see cases like mine.I went to UCC and was seen within 10 minutes of booking in with reception. Once in the consulting room I was asked all the normal questions and then my attempt at first aid was removed and the blood started to pour out again. I was taken straight through to another room and I was prepared for the required stitches to stop the bleed.
The total time I was in the care of UCC was 40 minutes from arrival to departing, which is a credit to all the team members there that night. Thank you to all of you.
