"Out patients appointment"

About: South Tyneside District Hospital

My husband saw a consultant in the TIA clinic (he was a locum consultant) who we were less than impressed by. The room layout was such that the computer screen was placed at an angle so the consultant sat with his back to us whenever he looked at the screen ( which was the majority of the consultation). He asked the auxillary nurse who sat in the room for a hammer to do a neurological examination..which I presume is pretty much standard practice for anyone who is seeing the Doctor to assess if they have had a stroke or not. She didn't have one and to give her her due after some scratching round in desk drawers the dr looking in his bag ect she did say she would try to "rustle one up". Any way one wasn't found and the examination was completed without one. The DR also asked that my husband should have an ECG as he wanted to see if there was a cardiac reason for his problem. The nurse said there was no one to do an ECG ! That's not correct information as south tyneside has an open access ECG department. I told the nurse about that. Luckily he was being seen in the cardiology dept and they are excellent and did one before he saw the consultant there.Surely she should know and shouldn't be making decisions on whether patients have tests or not. I have thought long and hard about putting this review on line it's not something I normally do but small changes would have made a difference to this consultation...changing the position of the screen so at least we weren't sitting facing his back....adequate equipment...surley neurological hammers aren't an expensive piece of equipment.
